Classic Picture Books–Our Favorites

by Carolyn | Animal books, Baby, Board Books, Book Lists, Character Training, Classics, Education, Newbery, Older Elementary, Picture Books, Toddler

I usually review newer picture books, but sometimes it’s good to take a look back in time. Classic picture books have a lot to offer our fast-paced society with their simple, slower pace. They can remind us to slow down, take notice, embrace imagination. These...

Indestructibles: Books Kids (Almost) Can’t Destroy

by Carolyn | Animal books, Baby, Board Books, For fun, Parenting, Picture Books, Preschool, Toddler, Wordless Books

Here it is, all shiny and new, the book I’m going to try to destroy. Just typing that makes me cringe. And why do I want to destroy this book? Well, the name is an inherent challenge: “Indestructibles: Chew Proof, Rip Proof, Nontoxic, 100% Washable.”...

Shape Books that Think Outside the Box (Picture Book Edition)

by Carolyn | Baby, Book Lists, Education, Imagination, Nonfiction, Picture Books, Preschool, Toddler

A few weeks ago, I introduced you to my favorite board books that teach shapes in creative ways. And those are a great place to start, especially for toddlers. But sometimes your preschoolers need more shape practice as well, and they want real picture books, not...

Counting Blessings by Eileen Spinelli

by Carolyn | Animal books, Baby, Bible, Board Books, Picture Books, Poetry, Toddler

Counting Blessings by Eileen Spinelli is a sweet, rhyming counting book of blessings for young children. It’s a sturdy board book with a soft, padded cover (less likely to be chewed up by book-hungry babies). The illustrations of bunnies and other animals by Lee...

Shape Books That Think Outside the Box (Board Book Edition)

by Carolyn | Animal books, Baby, Board Books, Book Lists, Education, Preschool, Toddler

Books are such great resources for teaching and reinforcing early learning concepts like shapes, colors, and numbers. But after a couple of kids (or even a couple of weeks reading the same books to one kid), we moms are ready for something a bit more interesting....

Favorite Board Books to Read Over and Over Again

by Carolyn | Baby, Board Books, Book Lists, Preschool, Read Alouds, Recommendations, Toddler

Let’s face it, moms. We complain that our toddler wants to hear the same book over and over and over. But that’s usually because it’s a book we can’t stand. But we do the same thing! We have a few books we prefer to read. At least, I know I do!...

The Maple And Willow Books: The Journey of Sisterhood

by Carolyn | Girls, Nature, Parenting, Picture Books, Read Alouds, Recommendations, Toddler

I never had a sister, but I do have three girls, so I’m always excited to find a book about sisters getting along (or learning to do so). And I’ve recently found a delightful series of picture books that do just that! Lori Nichols series about Maple and...

Home by Carson Ellis–A Picture Book Review

by Carolyn | For fun, Imagination, Older Elementary, Picture Books, Preschool, Read Alouds, Recommendations, Toddler

This fun picture book totally surprised me! I had expected Home by Carson Ellis to be about different types of homes people from around the world from highrises and ranches to igloos and wigwams. And Home does start out that way. Then, just when you think you know...

Readers have asked me for more adventurous books t Readers have asked me for more adventurous books that boys would like, and I think the Lost Art Mysteries series by Deron R. Hicks fits the bill. Boys and girls alike will be pulled into these fast-paced novels that read like a spy thrillers. They'll be so engaged they won't mind learning a little bit about art along the way. Maybe they'll even ask to visit an art museum after reading these! (Let me know if they do!)

It's been a wild week, y'all! Would you blame this It's been a wild week, y'all! Would you blame this still-thawing Texan for not having scheduled some book content for this week?

It may be back up to the 70's now, but we're still dealing with a boil water notice in my area.

I've got so much to be thankful for. Our power never went out. Our pipes didn't burst. We got to enjoy the company of my brother-in-law and sister-in-law and their two-year-old who didn't have power to heat their home. And we had enough food and bottled water that we didn't have to venture out on icy roads to face the bare shelves at the grocery store.

Still, with trying to feed nine people and boil snow, I didn't do much reading (other than Hippos Go Berserk to my niece) or writing (other than a few descriptions of snow). The snow was magical, but so is running water.

All that to say, I've got more bookish posts coming soon.
Are your kids re-readers? When I first came Are your kids re-readers?

When I first came across this quote from C.S. Lewis, I realized I had been missing out on something. I wasn't a re-reader as a kid, but I've certainly seen the benefits in my own children and have learned to enjoy it myself.

When readers contact me saying they can't keep their kids in books, encouraging re-reading is one of my first recommendations. Help your kids to see favorite books as old friends. Not only will they never have the nothing to read excuse again, they'll get more out of those favorites with each re-reading.

What is a good you or your kids have enjoyed re-reading?
