I don’t know how it started, but there has been a surplus of funny picture books with dragons published in the last few years. And when I say funny, I mean hilarious. I literally can’t read some of these without laughing out loud.

If you have a child who likes dragons or just loves to laugh, these are your next reads.

Dragon Was Terrible by Kelly DiPucchio

Dragon does terrible thinks like stomp on flowers, spit on cupcakes, and take candy from baby unicorns. The king offers a reward, but none of the brave knights are able to stop him. You’ll love the clever way the hero solves the dragon problem. What makes this story so hilarious is the narrative voice. DiPucchio is a master of words, and this book is made to be read aloud.

The Forgetful Knight by Michelle Robinson

This rhyming book had the feel of a clean Monty Python film. It’s tongue-in-cheek, laugh-out-loud funny as the forgetful knight keeps changing the details of his story.

It Came in the Mail by Ben Clanton

This book is really more about the fun of getting mail and the magic of sharing, but it does involve the adorable dragon you see on the cover. It’s sweet and funny in all the best ways.

Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin

This might be the book that started the funny dragon trend. Dragons love tacos, but, whatever you do, don’t give them salsa!

Dear Dragon by Josh Funk

This is a sweet, clever (and rhyming!) pen-pal story. What if a boy and a dragon were pen pals, but didn’t realize their big difference? Funk uses clever word-play to disguise their identities from each other until the end of the story.

There was an old Dragon Who Swallowed a Knight by Penny Parker Klostermann

This clever book is based on the song “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.” The dragon swallows one thing after another, but the language is so clever and funny! And while “it’s not polite” to swallow a knight, they way everyone exits his stomach is not polite either (but your kids will think it’s hysterical).
