100 Cupboards Series by ND Wilson

100 Cupboards Series by ND Wilson

by Carolyn | Adventure, Boys, Fantasy, Imagination, Juvenile Fiction, Middle School, Middle-grade, Scary Stories

I just re-read one of my favorite juvenile fiction series so I could share it with you. It was just as good the second time around (maybe better). The 100 Cupboards Series by N.D. Wilson (100 Cupboards, Dandelion Fire, and The Chestnut King) is the story of Henry, an...
Shannon Hale: Fairy Tales Told Anew

Shannon Hale: Fairy Tales Told Anew

by Carolyn | Cultural Diversity, Fantasy, Girls, Highschool, Imagination, Juvenile Fiction, Middle School, Newbery, Young Adult

I’ve been on a bit of a Shannon Hale kick recently. I listened to three of her books in a row this past month: Goose Girl, Princess Academy, and Book of 1,000 Days. I love reinvented fairy tales (so long as good versus evil isn’t turned on its head). And...
Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes by Jonathan Auxier

Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes by Jonathan Auxier

by Carolyn | Adventure, Audiobooks, Boys, Character Training, Fantasy, Imagination, Juvenile Fiction, Middle School, Middle-grade

Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes had my kids (and me) hooked from the first pages (or, rather, the first few minutes as we listened to the audiobook). Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes is the story of Peter, a blind orphan forced into a life of thievery by the...
The Night Gardener: Not Just A Scary Story

The Night Gardener: Not Just A Scary Story

by Carolyn | Adventure, Character Training, Girls, Historical Fiction, Imagination, Middle School, Middle-grade, Mystery, Read Alouds, Scary Stories

How do you feel about scary stories for kids? When I was a kid, Goosebumps was a popular series, but, honestly, Nancy Drew was too suspenseful for me! On the other hand, my daughter loves “scary” books (at the same age that I couldn’t handle them)....

Is All The Wrong Questions a Good Series?

Is All The Wrong Questions a Good Series?

by Carolyn | Adventure, For fun, Imagination, Juvenile Fiction, Middle School, Older Elementary, Steampunk

Is All the Wrong Questions by Lemony Snicket a good series? Yes. But that’s the wrong question. What you should be asking is, “Does my child like mysterious books that don’t take themselves too seriously?” I’ve read the first two books in...
City of Ember Trumps Divergent for Young Readers: Here’s Why

City of Ember Trumps Divergent for Young Readers: Here’s Why

by Carolyn | Adventure, Dystopian Future, Juvenile Fiction, Middle School, Older Elementary, Read Alouds, Sci-fi

Dystopian future novels have been very popular the last several years with the Hunger Games and Divergent among the front runners (read my review of Divergent). These types of novels hold an immense appeal. They feel more realistic than straight out fantasy. They also...
Books that Inspire Imagination

Books that Inspire Imagination

by Carolyn | Adventure, Book Lists, Highschool, Imagination, Juvenile Fiction, Middle School, Older Elementary, Picture Books, Reading, Recommendations, Wordless Books, Young Adult

Ok, let’s be honest, almost any book can (and should) inspire the imagination. But some are just better at it than others. In my opinion, there are three basic kinds of books that inspire imagination: 1) Books in which the main character(s) are playing...

My husband is a pediatrician, so when I see a book My husband is a pediatrician, so when I see a book like GOD CARES FOR ME, I immediately think to buy a few copies for his office. But this story resonated so much with my youngest daughter that we're keeping a copy for our house as well.

Author @scott_h_james is also a pediatrician and a parent, so he's seen sickness from multiple angles. And his perspective in this book is incredibly helpful. He gently urges kids to shift their focus away from themselves to trusting in God and caring for others.

This book is both timely and timeless, and I highly recommend it. (Full review coming soon on @story_warren)

Readers have asked me for more adventurous books t Readers have asked me for more adventurous books that boys would like, and I think the Lost Art Mysteries series by Deron R. Hicks fits the bill. Boys and girls alike will be pulled into these fast-paced novels that read like a spy thrillers. They'll be so engaged they won't mind learning a little bit about art along the way. Maybe they'll even ask to visit an art museum after reading these! (Let me know if they do!)

It's been a wild week, y'all! Would you blame this It's been a wild week, y'all! Would you blame this still-thawing Texan for not having scheduled some book content for this week?

It may be back up to the 70's now, but we're still dealing with a boil water notice in my area.

I've got so much to be thankful for. Our power never went out. Our pipes didn't burst. We got to enjoy the company of my brother-in-law and sister-in-law and their two-year-old who didn't have power to heat their home. And we had enough food and bottled water that we didn't have to venture out on icy roads to face the bare shelves at the grocery store.

Still, with trying to feed nine people and boil snow, I didn't do much reading (other than Hippos Go Berserk to my niece) or writing (other than a few descriptions of snow). The snow was magical, but so is running water.

All that to say, I've got more bookish posts coming soon.
