The school year is just around the corner. Perhaps your kids have already started! Let’s celebrate with some picture books about school!

These are some of the best picture books out there about school (including one about homeschooling)! Whether your kid is starting kindergarten, has a difficult teacher, is the sibling left behind, has a friend who is different, or homeschools, I think I’ve got the book for you.

This is My Home, This is My School by Jonathan Bean–This is one of my family’s favorite picture books! Not to mention, it is the only traditionally published picture book about homeschooling (that I’m aware of at this time), and it is beautifully done. If you homeschool, your kids will love this book. Even if you don’t homeschool, this is a great way to show your kids what life might be like for their homeschooled friends or neighbors.

Maple & Willow Apart by Lori Nichols–I adore the Maple and Willow series. In this book, Maple is going to school for the first time and leaving behind her sister and best friend Willow. Both girls cope in their own way and find new ways to keep their friendship strong.

Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten? by Audrey Vernick–This book is a fun way to introduce the idea of kindergarten to kids. Having the Buffalo be the beginner will help put kids at ease and make them realize kindergarten isn’t scary at all (without ever introducing the idea that it might be).

The Sandwich Swap by Queen Rania Al Abdullah and Kelly DiPucchio–This book beautifully displays what it is to have a school friendship with someone whose culture is different than yours. I love the way both girls have to accept the other’s sandwich, which they think will be gross. I also love that this book was based on the author’s actual experience.

My Teacher is a Monster! (No, I Am Not.) by Peter Brown–I definitely identified with the teacher in this book. Bobby is always getting in trouble. So, he thinks his somewhat gruff teacher is a monster. But, through an encounter in the park, he learns that even teachers are people too. My kids thought this book was hilarious (and they probably think I’m a monster sometimes too. No, I am not.).
